My Interview with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano: The Famous Dutch Djs Who Met in a Clothing Store

I was very happy to hear that Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano will also be attending the Untold Festival In Cluj, Romania, where they will be performing as a DJ duo. I was also very happy to hear that I was offered an exclusive chance to interview them before the festival. Therefore here is my 10 question interview with Sunnery and Ryan.

 When and where did you guys meet?

We met at a clothing store where Sunnery was working and Ryan applied for a job as an intern. At that time Sunnery was in charge of the interns, he thought Ryan was ok. We started to hang out and found out we had several common interests. Like house music. Ryan was the first to mix and DJ. Sunnery was trying to get him some gigs, but before we knew we were playing together. After that things went very fast for us as a duo.”

When did you start DJing and who inspired you to become DJs?

Let’s say we started way back, when we were still young and went clubbing several times a week. At that time we were mostly inspired by Amsterdam based dj’s like Roog, Erick E, Marcello and Dimitri. Who played at legendary clubs; the iT and RoXY. Dj Roog especially, we followed that guy everywhere! Fun fact, nowadays we get to book Roog at our own Sexy by Nature shows. It’s still amazing to watch him perform!

Did your family play any role in deciding your music career?

We both have Surinam roots and were raised with such a wide range of music genres. So in a way it played a role, but they never pushed us to become dj’s. However they did support us from the start!

What do you consider to be the highest moment in your musical career?

We’re very proud of our own Sexy by Nature nights. Those nights represent everything we are as DJ’s. We invite DJ’s that fit us and the Sexy by Nature concept. Each time we do a show, it’s so special!

What are the main challenges you face as a DJ and what is it about DJing that makes it interesting for you? 

Travelling the world can be pretty exhausting. The little sleep is definitely a challenge sometimes. But travelling is also one of the best things about Djing, when travelling the world we get to see so many different places and cultures. We are so grateful to be able to do what we love; entertain crowds with our music.

Do you two ever disagree about things?

When you spend as much time together as we do, it’s quite normal that you disagree at times. So yeah it happens at times, but mostly we are best buddies!

What are the main things you do to prepare for a concert?

We get some rest and grab a drink. Nothing special..

What do you do when you are not DJing or practicing for a set? Do you have any hobbies?

Ryan as an almost to be dad and Sunnery as an experienced dad, we like to spend most of our time off with family and friends!

Q9: What are your next musical projects? What are your plans for the future?

First up our Sexy by Nature show on August 15 at Governor’s Island New York City. And we just announced our own Sexy by Nature show at Ushuaïa Ibiza! Future plans; keep doing what we love to do; entertain crowds, make music and travel the world.

Q10: What advice to you give young people who want to start a career in DJing?

Sounds cliche, but if you think your sound is different. Get out there and go for it!
